Grete’s Great Gallop – Leopard Party – Oct 1, 2017

The happy couple ūüėÄ

Is there a better way to celebrate an impending wedding than with a group race? ¬†Not if you’re all dressed in coordinating leopard outfits, that’s for sure! ¬†This past Sunday I ran NYRR’s Grete’s Great Gallop 10K to celebrate my friend Ben’s wedding (this Saturday!). ¬†Even if you don’t know Ben, you might actually recognize him as the almost naked runner who frequents NYRR races.

Me and Ben at Beat the Blerch in Washington, 2014.

A group of us decided to run this 10K together a while ago, but I’m impressed at the level of commitment to costuming displayed by all! ¬†There wasn’t a single person who didn’t have at least some leopard on them – and two guys went “full-Ben” with tight shorts and no tops!

Ain’t no party like a leopard party…

‘Cause a leopard party don’t stop!

Even the spectators got into the leopard theme!  Ben was also surprised by his bride-to-be, who told him she was going to work that day but instead ran her first 10K with him!  She also sprinted easily through the finish, so I have a feeling more races will be in her future!

I even did my nails for this race – and was inordinately proud of my job.

After the race a smaller group of us went out to brunch and had chocolate chip muffins with strawberry butter, then went to Levain bakery for even more chocolate chip goodness.  Needless to say, this is the kind of running I can get behind.

The 10K itself was fine – another standard NYRR race. ¬†We started in the very back so it wasn’t too crowded, and I literally chatted the entire way, so that was nice (thanks, D-lo!). ¬†There were bagels and apples at the finish, along with cups of water and Gatorade. ¬†My favorite part about the race itself was the shirt – it’s a cotton/poly mix and so so soft! ¬†It’s a shirt you can wear running or just lounging around, and since 98% of my time is spent lounging around and only 2% running, I’m very happy with this shirt.

I love this soft, cozy shirt!

Ok, so maybe I spend 1.97% of my running time thinking about running. ¬†Speaking of, I signed up for a couple more marathons next year – Tobacco Road Marathon in North Carolina and Martha’s Vineyard Marathon in Massachusetts. ¬†Gotta get back on that 50 State quest – those states aren’t running themselves.

Race Recap – Oakley New York Mini 10K, June 13, 2015

NY Mini 10K

My friend put it best when she said, “I had no idea there were so many women in New York City until I saw that race this morning.”

Yes, the Oakley Mini 10K brings out the ladies for a run up Central Park West, into the park, around the loop, and finishing near Tavern on the Green. ¬†7,874 ladies, to be precise, from 12 to 95 (the 95-year-old crushed our time, by the way, finishing in only 1 hour 10 minutes, if that’s to be believed). ¬†Why is it called a “mini” 10K if it’s a full 10K? ¬†Wikipedia says it’s because when this women’s-only race was first introduced in 1972, it was called the “Crazylegs Mini Marathon,” both because it was not actually a full marathon and in homage to the “miniskirt” (the sponsor “Crazylegs” was a women’s shaving gel).

I ran this race with a friend, who had to suffer through my needing to walk downhill (her favorite parts to run) and my need to stop and stretch/massage my leg due to cramping. ¬†And while the NYRR race site said it was only 77 degrees with 56% humidity, it definitely felt much hotter than that. ¬†Luckily they supplied ample water and several misting stations, and since it was a women’s-only race, I didn’t see anyone passed out on the side.

NYC Mini 10K medal 2015I think I paid $35 for this race as a NYRR member. ¬†Besides the race tank top (85% poly, 15% cotton, available in black or grey), runners got a nice medal, a carnation, and snacks at the finish (bags of pretzels, apples, and bagels). ¬†You could also get a $20 coupon off a pair of Oakleys by showing your existing pair of Oakleys, and your race bib gets you 20% off at the Oakley store from now until Monday, June 15th. ¬†I actually really do like Oakleys for running – they’re lightweight, stick to your sweaty face, and I can trust that they have good UV protection (versus bargain no-name glasses).

Despite the heat, it was a fun race, and the best part was that I saw literally everyone I know in New York City during this race (and almost my entire base of blog subscribers!). ¬†Thank you to the spectators and volunteers (I’m pretty sure my friend handing out flowers at the end got more than one proposal). ¬†Now I suppose I should continue the women’s-only theme and binge-watch Orange is the New Black.

Oh, and while Sia’s Elastic Heart ran through my head during all 6 hours of the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, I cannot get Lean On by Major Lazer & DJ Snake out of my head today (that’s the first time I’ve seen that video, but I do appreciate that she’s pretty much dressed to go running).

Do you know how many women there are in NYC?  Do you wear sunglasses when you run?  Do you think a 95-year-old really ran a 10K in 1:10?  Share in the comments!
